THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE WITH A GOOD THERAPISTUnique approach, therapeutic style and successful outcomes
The most meaningful measure of this work is how clients describe it themselves.
♦ You feel validated by their understanding, acknowledgement and acceptance.
"Meagan is showing me how to deal with things and not to ignore red flags. I feel like she listens and gives me great advice — but also makes sure I process my emotions right when they happen. She's teaching me to face conversations I don't want to so I don't keep repeating the same patterns. I love my therapist and I'm thankful to be in the sessions because I find them helpful."
"She meets me where I am and tells me what I need to hear in the best way for me to accept that that’s what I need to accept and what I need to hear."
♦ They explain concepts and symptoms in a way that you can understand
"It's been good. She's easy to talk to. She breaks up points that maybe I don't see when I'm in the middle of emotional dysregulation. When I have decision paralysis, she motivates me and says, 'This is what I can do.' When your therapist isn't relatable, it's not gonna be a good experience."
"Our therapy sessions are very informative and enlightening. She's very supportive and encouraging for me to do the things I need to do.."
♦ You have a therapeutic alliance based on mutual respect.
"It's the best thing that has ever happened to me. I've even recommended her to my sister. Meagan, that's my therapist — she's amazing! She talks to me like I'm a regular person, like we're best friends. And she'll tell me what I need to hear instead of what I want to hear, and how I can apply it to my life."
"I love my therapist because she feels like a best friend I just met and we clicked instantly. I can tell her anything and everything. It's honestly been making me feel better — I don't have to hold anything in because I can talk to somebody who gives me good advice and tells me right from wrong."
♦ They build trust to help you work through issues that arise.
"She's very relatable and honest and straight up and down to earth. It's helped better my communication and my anxiety with certain things that I don't even think to stress about anymore."
"It is very transparent and it feels like a comfortable, safe setting that's judgment free but yet still truthful."
♦ They challenge you and hold you accountable, respectfully.
"It's been challenging, it's been rewarding, and it's been life changing. I feel like I've been with her for so long now that I can't imagine my life without her. From the very beginning, it was hard and she pushed me. But I realized that it was because I was having to realize things and be realistic. She asked the questions that no one else asked to get to the root of where I was at. Now, I totally adore her — she knows me so well that she can easily send me in the right direction."
"She makes me walk through the hard things that I don't want to deal with. She makes me realize there's a little light at the end of the tunnel so there's a little bit of hope."
♦ They are invested in your growth.
"Hopeful is the word that comes to mind. She has helped me see my own worth and overcome everything that happened during my childhood — the abandonment issues, helping my inner child heal, and actually being able to name my emotions. But also she keeps me accountable too."
"I would describe therapy with Meagan as productive. She doesn't beat around the bush and is straight forward — I appreciate that. She's pretty direct and informative; I've learned a lot about ADHD. I like the resources she provides and I like the idea that I can email her and she will respond."
♦ They offer resources and recommendations while also respecting your agency.
"She's a good therapist. She gives a lot of material. She tries to really relate and find new techniques for me — if one's not working, she's good at giving me another solution. She gives a lot of information and a lot of resources."
"It's been very beneficial — she's given me a lot of great resources for anxiety and being more aware about certain situations and how to regulate myself. I appreciate the fact that sometimes we can talk about other things too; it builds a better, stronger connection."
♦ They use various techniques and provide a range of solutions.
"It's been very helpful, understanding and supportive. I like how she goes through the emotions chart when I really can't describe how I'm feeling — that does help. I think I've been doing better with identifying my emotions. It feels like she actually cares; she's not just here to get paid and say goodbye."
"She asks probing questions and makes me think about things I don't really think about. She makes me question if my worries are true worries and that helps me out. She provides good frameworks for thinking about whether something is going to affect me — really helpful for dealing with family drama."
♦ They focus on what's important to you.
"She adapts to the situation she's presented with. She finds something for us to focus on. She adapts a lot to what I'm feeling and what I need in the moment — that's cool."
"Therapy has been one of the best decisions I've made in my life — being able to construct my thoughts and emotions in a good way. Therapy is exercise for your brain. It's something that's definitely needed, especially with anxiety, depression, and ADHD. I've recommended therapy to a lot of my friends and family."
♦ You can see the value in your work together.
"My therapeutic journey with her has helped me a lot in so many areas. It's like the portal that opened up for me to find out what's going on with me. It's been very informative and therapeutic in so many ways. I do not take her for granted and I truly appreciate her help."
"I talk her up all the time to people! I've made a lot of personal growth in all aspects of my life — she's the first therapist who has actually helped me. She individualizes things so much and really knows me — she's not all cliché like some. She's changed my life."
“Mental wellness is an intentional journey that requires the right strength, support and services.”
— Meagan Harrison, LCSW
BenefitsBenefits of participating in therapy?
I understand that vulnerability and trust within the therapeutic alliance can facilitate profound change. On average, our clients feel a sense of safety and comfort within the first 2-4 therapy sessions. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that almost 75% of people who begin therapy see some benefits after six months of mental health treatment.
Clients who attend therapy are happier, healthier, peaceful people that experience the following:
✔ Wake up refreshed from a good night’s sleep and ready to conquer the day
✔ Eat breakfast, get dressed and leave home on time
✔ Complete tasks before their deadlines and feel accomplished
✔ Receive feedback as opportunities for growth
✔ Feel calmer and at peace with things outside of your control
Benefits:
✔ Spend more time with people who make you laugh until your belly hurts
✔ Stabilize finances and emotions enough to do things you enjoy
✔ Try new things and experience gratitude
✔ Hope for the best because you believe you deserve it
✔ Implement strategies to the life you desire
What can happen if you don’t attend therapy
For people who don’t come to therapy, their situation may improve but the conditions left untreated can worsen and cause serious consequences. Untreated depression, anxiety and ADHD can lead to suicidal thoughts or actions, self harm, panic attacks, phobias, school dropout, unemployment, unhealthy relationships, divorce, and bankruptcy.
These negative outcomes can become debilitating, dangerous or fatal but/and are also preventable. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than a quarter of adults in America experience depression, anxiety, or another mental disorder in any given year. Early recognition and appropriate treatment in therapy can help you focus on yourself, see positive outcomes and live a better life.
